Paul Harris Fellow awards were originally inspired by Paul Harris who donated a trust fund to Rotary so that people who have done exceptional work on behalf of Rotary and who deserve recognition as the certificate says; “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world”.
During my time as founder president and the forming of the Oxford Spires Rotary Club I never thought for one minute that I would be bestowed with any recognition of the effort I had put in to getting our club finally accepted as a genuine Rotary club. I just felt it was my duty as the president to do what had to be done and form our club in a way that was both beneficial to Rotary as a whole and also flexible enough to make it possible to run effectively, considering the work and family commitments of a younger generation.
Reflecting back now, I never gave it a thought that I was in fact following the Rotary motto which is “Service above self” so when I was presented with The Paul Harris Fellow certificate it came as a much appreciated and somewhat unexpected surprise.
Since our club first chartered in June 2003 we have presented other Paul Harris award certificates to Ian and Liz Williamson, for the outstanding contributions they have made to the various money raising ventures and the time and effort put in by them, in the organisation and running of these events, that are so essential and beneficial to the various charities that we support, and so desperately need organisations like ours to keep providing a service.
