Anna is the Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Oxfordshire and she was a very informative and entertaining speaker at our club meeting on Tuesday 22nd September. She gave an overview of Macmillan’s history, key cancer statistics and cancer risk factors, where to turn for help in the event of a diagnosis, and simple ways to support the cancer charity.
She told us about Macmillan nurses who are initially funded by the charity and then by the hospitals in which they work. She explained that as cancers were first diagnosed, they were more prevalent in wealthier areas of the country, linked to overseas summer holidays in the sun, and that those serving in the forces also had a higher incidence of skins cancers on their hands and necks after serving in hot climates.
At Macmillan, they know how a cancer diagnosis can affect everything and they’re here to support you through. From help with money worries and advice about work, to someone who’ll listen if you just want to talk, they are there.
One of Macmillan’s biggest fundraisers is the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, this year on 30th September. Anna might be visiting up to ten coffee & cake events in one day!
Lesley in our club will be hosting an afternoon tea, also for Macmillan Cancer Support, in a few weeks time.
