Evelyn Wilks, from the Friends of Vale House, came to tell us about the move of the care home from Botley to a new purpose-built home in Sandford-upon-Thames.
Vale House is a home specifically for those with dementia. Not only does it look after the patients but it also supports their families who have to watch their loved ones go through this illness which sometimes leaves the patient not even knowing who their family members are.
It was a very interesting and moving talk and after much thought I felt that I would let their web page (http://www.valehouse.org.uk/) do the talking. Their site explains in far more exact terms what they do, and the huge amount of time that dedicated staff devote to each patient with therapy sessions, music and cookery. Even if, as Evelyn told us, the cookery sessions just involve the patient giving the ingredients a bit of a stir, while the rest is done by a member of staff, what’s important is that patients are retaining their dignity and keeping as active as possible.
Vale House is our President’s Charity for the Rotary year 2012/13.
Thank you to Evelyn for an interesting, moving and thought-provoking talk.
