Tim returned to speak to us about his trip to Sweden as part of the Oxfordshire Scout Jamboree Unit. He previously spoke to us in February 2011 and Spires gave a donation towards the Unit’s fundraising efforts for the Jamboree. The Oxfordshire unit raised money for their own trip but also to enable scouts from Armenia, Papua New Guinea and Sierra Leone to attend the jamboree.
There were 40,000 scouts on the site and it was split into four seasons and the Oxfordshire group camped next to scouts from Thailand. The tents were sent in advance and then the scouts put them up when they arrived. Tim’s group hosted a Mad Hatters Tea Party with fish and chips, and Tim told us about the meals that he had with groups of different nationalities. He showed us the badges, kit and uniforms that he brought home having swapped it for lots of his UK kit.
The Oxford group spent two days in Copenhagen, followed by two weeks at the camp in Sweden then four days in Finland with a Finnish family. He went to school and attended Biology and History lessons in Finnish.
Tim clearly had a fantastic time and showed us lots of photos and told us about the many new friends that he had met. He said that he’d like to go the Wolrd Jamboree in the USA as a leader or as part of the service team.
