Oxford Spires sponsors a child in India through Plan UK, part of Plan International, an organisation that works for children and their communities in some of the world’s poorest countries.
Vivek was born in 2004 and we have sponsored him since 2006, Each month at our meal meeting we have a raffle to cover the sponsorship costs. Vivek lives with his family in a small village in Uttarkashi, the northern most district in Uttaranchal State in Northern India, bordering China and Tibet. Vivek attends primary school approximately 45 minutes from home. Vivek’s favourite subject could be maths, literature or English – reports vary, and we think it’s perfecetly normal for a child to change his mind!
Donations fund community-based projects, so all children in the community benefit from Plan’s work. In Vivek’s community Plan has helped with activities to raise awareness on health, immunisation for children and pregnant women, and the provision of computers and other equipment to support health organisations.
Plan projects in the area listed in the June 2015 report include:
- Training for volunteers on early childhood care and development
- Construction and repair of a school
- Activities to raise awareness on hygiene, sanitation and the use of water
- Assistance in disaster reconstruction
- Support to families in accessing credit and saving services
As a club we send letters and pictures to Vivek and he has also written to us.
